What is Nail Trauma?

A fingernail or a toenail can be injured by a blow to the nail or by any crash injury to the distal phalanx (finger pinched in a drawer/doorway) leading to nail trauma. This kind of trauma results in the collection of blood under the nail and the condition is called subungual hematoma.

Causes

Some other causes Subungual hematoma are-

• Use of ill-fitting shoes (can affect toenails)
• Nail biting
• Cuticle biting

Signs and symptoms

Subungual hematoma appears dark red under the nail and the affected finger or toe may be painful. The patient might experience a throbbing sensation.

Diagnosis

Physical examination is mandatory to rule out any disruption of the nail fold. The affected finger is also assessed for its motor function, sensation and circulation. An X ray may be advised after determining the extent and the cause of trauma.

General management

Nail trauma can be prevented by wearing proper sized shoes and trimming of the finger nails. Also, the cuticle must not be bitten.
