What is Acidosis?
Acidosis is a process or processes leading to increased acidity in blood and body tissues. Acidemia is a low blood pH falling below 7.35. There can be Metabolic acidosis or Respiratory Acidosis.
Causes
Metabolic acidosis can occur due to ketoacidosis, diarrhoea (bicarbonate loss) or renal failure. Respiratory acidosis is due to an increase of carbon dioxide in blood caused by lung problems – chronic bronchitis, emphysema, severe pneumonia, aspiration, head injury, certain drugs and brain tumour.
Signs and Symptoms
Signs and symptoms include headache, fatigue, confusion, tremors, sleepiness, etc. There may be cerebral involvement which can result in coma if left untreated.
Management
Treatment is mainly focused on correcting the underlying cause and neutralization of acidosis.
